Congratulations to Jenny Achuthan, 2023 Volunteer of the Year!

Jenny Achuthan receives the 2023 Volunteer of the Year Award from Envision Unlimited President and CEO Mark McHugh during a November awards dinner.

When it comes to getting outside and enjoying a beautiful Chicago day, Envision Unlimited Volunteer of the Year Jenny Achuthan doesn’t need much coaxing. Especially when cycling and our members are involved.

Achuthan has dedicated her time to Envision Unlimited since 2017. Given her love of cycling, she first got involved with our Buddy Biking program, pairing up with members for weekly rides along the 606 Trail near our Westtown Center.

“It becomes such a part of what I do,” Achuthan said. “You have friendships that you develop with the members. … I’m very grateful for that experience.”

Achuthan always had a heart for philanthropic work. Prior to becoming a stay-at-home mom, she worked at a nonprofit, creating programs for pediatric cancer patients. Now that she’s an empty-nester, she said Envision Unlimited has given her a purpose beyond raising children. And after six years of volunteering, she doesn’t have any plans to curb her efforts.

These days, she’s often seen at our Westtown Center, helping with weekly projects and activities. She was also an active participant during our inaugural Summer of Cycling biking series, and she became our top fundraiser, generating important funds to support our ongoing programs.

Last month, she was honored for her efforts along with nearly 50 staff members at our annual Employee and Volunteer of the Year Awards

“What I love about volunteering for Envision Unlimited is that the appreciation from our members is so evident,” Achuthan said. “It’s very gratifying to know that the organization feels the impact as well.”

“I did 16 miles when we went to the Major Taylor Juneteenth ride this year,” said Envision Unlimited member Anthony. “I wanted to do something bigger, so my goal was to ride 30 miles at Bike the Drive. I didn’t know if I could handle it. … It was actually pretty easy! I rode with Jenny for the whole 30 miles. She was the best partner ever. … I felt so proud of myself."  Pictured here: Anthony B (center) with riding partner Jenny Achuthan and coach Paul Groshko.
